KENDRA E. MOORE, PhD, President & CEO

Kendra loves finding patterns and recurring structures in the world - whether in data, people's activities, business processes, or relationships. Using her pattern recognition insights, she defines frameworks to rapidly model systems, and the models enable data exploitation and timely decision making. As President, she applies that same approach to Boston Fusion, by identifying patterns of opportunities, projects, and personnel, to create a structure where everyone can be at his/her best.

Kendra believes that the most interesting problems are those that require multi- or cross-disciplinary approaches to solve – decomposing complex problems into their constituent parts, fusing multiple types of data, applying different modeling and analysis approaches, and assembling the results into a coherent process or system. And, many, if not all, of these problems involve understanding patterns: in the data, in the problem definitions, in matching approaches to component problems, and in the system composition and deployment. Kendra founded Boston Fusion to bring together the right people to attack these problems and to create an environment in which we can develop novel solutions to support today’s decision makers.

Prior to founding Boston Fusion, Kendra was a program manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where she managed a $180 million research portfolio. Before that, she was a consultant and researcher in the private sector.

She earned her PhD and MS degrees in Operations Research from Northeastern University. She also holds MA and BA, magna cum laude, degrees in Philosophy of Religion from Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary and Stephens College, respectively.

During her five and a half years as a DARPA Program Manager (2005-2010), Kendra managed several research programs, including:

Predictive Analysis for Naval Defense Activities (PANDA): automatically learns motion-based patterns and detects deviations, and uses context data to prioritize alerts;

Fast Connectivity for Coalitions and Agents Program (Fast C2AP): detection of instances of user-defined behavior of interest in maritime domain;

Graph Understanding and Analysis for Rapid Discovery – Deployed on the Ground (GUARD DOG): large-scale network analysis on HUMINT data;

Resilient Command and Control (RC2): technology to manage military C2 systems in the face of failures and attacks to assure that they can continue to support the operational missions;

Several studies exploring adaptive machine learning, strategic collaboration, and command and control and multiple Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) projects.

Prior to joining DARPA, Kendra was President and Founder of Advestan, Inc., where she provided R&D consulting services to DoD customers and contractors in advanced estimation, analysis, and exploitation for large-scale information fusion applications. Before that, she was Director of Information Fusion at ALPHATECH, Inc., where she was responsible for new business development, project management, and personnel management. She led the development of ultra-large scale data mining algorithms and supporting database technologies to detect, track, and provide warning of threat activities.

Kendra is a recipient of the Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service (2010), DARPA Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in a Systems Technology Area (2008), and was recognized by Department of Defense as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Role Model (2006).

RICHARD SALVAGE, CFA, Director, Finance & Administration

Rich is responsible for the overall Financial Management, Contracts Management, and Office Administration at Boston Fusion. Rich has over 15 years of progressive experience in contracts and accounting positions, and brings a broad range of knowledge in these areas including negotiating and administering government contracts, a strong understanding of the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), and accounting and financial management skills. Rich oversees all of Boston Fusion’s financial and accounting functions including: general cost accounting, budgeting, tax planning and reporting, cash management, and ensuring the company accounting procedures conform to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. In addition, he interfaces with the company’s Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA), and the company’s bankers and insurance brokers.

Rich earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of Massachusetts, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Babson College. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Prior to joining Boston Fusion, Rich spent twelve years at Aptima, Inc., a small defense contractor. In his final position there as Controller, he was responsible for managing all of Aptima’s accounting and finance functions. Rich also worked at State Street Bank as a Senior Accountant, where he provided accounting services to a variety of clients within the Financial Services industry.

CARL WEIR, PhD, Senior Project Manager

Carl has been involved in advanced research and development for his entire 30-year career. At Boston Fusion, he serves as the program manager on multiple advanced research projects, including programs in cyber-defense and data analytics.

He has a technical background in automated decision support, data analytics, advanced computing technologies, and autonomous systems, and he has experience working with both defense and intelligence community customers.

Carl earned his PhD and MA degrees in Linguistics, specializing in model-theoretic semantics, from the University of Texas at Austin. His BA in Linguistics is from the University of Houston, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Prior to joining Boston Fusion, Carl worked for Lockheed Martin as a principal research scientist and senior program manager. In the Advanced Technology Office of Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems and Global Solutions (IS&GS) business unit, he was responsible for all contract research and development (CRAD) activity, managing contracts with DARPA, IARPA, the Intelligence Community, and the DoD service labs. In this position he worked in technology areas as diverse as C4ISR, cyber defense, neuromorphic architectures, and quantum computing, and gained experience managing large groups of research scientists and software developers.

While at Lockheed Martin, Carl led a research initiative under IARPA’s ICArUS program to develop a high fidelity spiking neural network model of human brain function for studying cognitive biases. He also led a large systems integration effort under DARPA’s ULTRA-Vis program to develop a capability for special ops squads to collaborate in GPS-denied environments using an advanced heads-up display (HUD).

In earlier research and development activities, Carl participated in software development efforts for text extraction systems, document retrieval systems, document image understanding systems, NLP-based human interfaces, and machine translation systems. He led the Lockheed Martin team that developed AeroText, a commercial data-mining product that extracts textual references to entities and events.

PRANAB BANERJEE, Senior Research Scientist

Pranab has over 20 years of R&D experience in the areas of computer vision, image processing, machine learning, data fusion, large scale computing, and data visualization applied primarily to solving problems in the the defense and aerospace sectors. Prior to joining Boston Fusion, Pranab was a research engineer in the Video Understanding and Exploitation (VUE) group at BAE Systems. He has a strong interest in exploring and developing algorithms inspired by biological systems as well as human social dynamics to solve computational problems.

Pranab is an avid photographer. In 2012, one of his photographs was selected as one of the top ten winners in the world from over 20,000 submissions in the prestigious “Worldwide Photo Walk” competition. Pranab received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, and his MS in Computational Physics from Kansas State University.

Dr. CHRIS KACZKOWSKI, Senior Engineer

Chris brings nearly 18 years of information technology & security experience, with much of his career working for the U.S. Government in the defense and intelligence communities. Chris specializes in computer network operations, focusing on the realms of defense and exploitation. Chris is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), experienced in network penetration testing, malware analysis, incident response, and computer forensics. He has led defensive cyber operations teams, developing actionable intelligence and mitigation responses for several high-profile intrusions.

Chris earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (Management of Information Systems concentration), from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, New York, a Master’s Degree in Management of Information Security Systems from Colorado Technical University, and a Doctorate of Business Administration in Computer Information Security from Northcentral University, Arizona.

Chris’ dissertation focused on the non-informed consent culture of online social network users. His in-depth research into the topic has sparked a significant interest in information privacy and security in an age of social media, as well the associated big data analytics and behavioral analysis. He is also interested in studying the growing security and privacy risks from the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

ANTHONY PALLADINO, PhD, Senior Research Scientist

Anthony enjoys developing innovative solutions to complex problems. He joined Boston Fusion after over a decade of research in large-scale fundamental physics experiments where he gained experience in statistical data analysis, multi-source data fusion, Monte Carlo simulation, and large-scale parallel computing. Specifically, he was focused on measuring fundamental properties of elementary particles, such as lepton universality at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. He searched for signs of a hypothetical dark photon in data from an electron-positron collider, DAΦNE, located in Italy, and he led the design of a gamma-ray and X-ray detection system for a precision experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to determine if charged leptons conserve a property called flavor.

He was previously a Research Scientist at Boston University and a Research Fellow at the National Laboratory of Frascati of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Italy.

Anthony earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Physics from the University of Virginia and his B.S. magna cum laude in Electrical Engineering with minors in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Connecticut.

ALEX GEORGE, PhD, Research Scientist

Alex joined Boston Fusion in 2016 after eight years of research in the physics community. As a particle physicist, Alex worked with CERN to use and develop analysis tools in order to search for evidence of new fundamental particles (similar to the Higgs Boson, which was discovered in 2011). Due to the low signal-to-background ratio, more advanced techniques were needed to search for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Now he applies similar techniques to solve tough technical problems and provide deliverables for Boston Fusion’s clients.

Alex has strong computing skills ranging from software development to statistical analysis in a variety of languages, and has a strong background/interest in the physical sciences, mathematics, computing, teaching, and the humanities.

Alex earned his PhD in Physics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh.

KEITH MA, Research Scientist

Keith Ma has worked to design, implement, optimize, and parallelize research software and computational workflows in many disciplines, both as an HPC specialist at Boston University and as a researcher at Yale University. His academic background is in the geosciences, specifically numerical and analog modeling of mountain uplift and erosion. The common thread in Keith's work is leveraging computational methods to extract information from datasets both large and small. At Boston Fusion, Keith applies these skills to a diverse set of machine learning and data fusion projects.

Keith expects to complete his PhD in Geology & Geophysics at Yale University in 2016 and earned a BA from Brown University in 2005.

CHRISTOPHER THISSEN, PhD, Research Scientist

Christopher Thissen harnesses the power of data to develop new solutions to practical problems. He joined Boston Fusion with eight years of experience using computational, statistical, and probabilistic tools to make sense out of data-intensive problems in the geological sciences. At Boston Fusion he leverages this experience to help transform data into actionable information.

Prior to joining Boston Fusion, Chris created new statistical tools to garner insights from large, messy geological datasets. Specifically, he developed and applied new statistical methods for analyzing three dimensional CT-scans of rocks and millions of crystal orientation measurements. Chris was also the recipient of the inaugural Stephen E. Laubach award for his efforts to fuse structural and sedimentary geology. He has applied his methods to better understand the forces governing geologically hazardous regions in the Pacific Northwest U.S. and ancient rocks the Scottish Highlands.

Christopher earned his Ph.D. in geology and geophysics from Yale University where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, and his B.S. summa cum laude in the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. Most recently, Chris was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC.

WILL MCBRIDE, Front-End Web Developer

Will McBride designs and builds web applications and graphical user interfaces that bring the solutions created by Boston Fusion’s research scientists to the user’s fingertips. He uses modern programming technologies to allow users to efficiently perform analyses on their datasets and gain meaningful insights.

Before joining Boston Fusion, Will worked in a variety of roles at a non-profit organization that fights to prevent human trafficking in Thailand. In 2016, he spent three weeks in northern Thailand filming a short documentary about the impact the organization made in the lives of people it supports.

Will graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans with a BSM in Finance in 2014.

TIFFANY LANGLOIS, Facility Security Officer

Tiffany graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She started her FSO journey while working as an internal corporate recruiter for a small, Department of Defense contracting company supporting IT and Intelligence. There, she spent 5 years assisting the FSO with safeguarding information and with personnel security. She was previously a member of the Florida Industrial Security Working Group (FISWG) and has completed both possessing and non-possessing facilities courses and certifications.

As the FSO of Boston Fusion, she is an active member in the NCMS New England Chapter as well as the Counterintelligence Working Group (CIWG). She plans and establishes security procedures to comply with federal regulations for handling Department of Defense (DoD) and/or Intelligence Community classified information and material. She also performs security functions required by the National Industrial Security Operating Manual (NISPOM), SCI Administrative Security Manual, and company policies in order to successfully pass required DSS security audits. Tiffany serves as the primary point of contact for all industrial security concerns and ensures that security is perceived as a critical process within Boston Fusion.

KAREN DAMERELL, Office Manager

Karen Damerell brings a diverse administrative background to her role as Office Manager. A graduate of UMASS Amherst, for twelve years she co-owned a digital graphic printing business in San Diego, CA where she lived while raising her family. Later Karen went to work for Bridgepoint Education where she held a variety of positions, most recently as State Compliance Coordinator. In 2014, Karen was very happy to return to her native New England, where she worked for the networking organization BNI MA before joining the Boston Fusion team.
